ASL/ESL Meetup

Saturday, August 6th, 1:00pm - 3:00pm

Beyond Borders Language Learning Center will be hosting a meetup for those people interested in American Sign Language and English as a Second Language. If you would like to learn more about these languages, a member of the deaf/hard of hearing community, a sign language interpreter or an English to Speakers of Other Languages instructor (ESOL), please join us! Our ASL instructor, Becky, and our ESL coordinator, Elizabeth, will be present during the meeting to answer any questions! We hope to see you there!

Beyond Borders Language Learning Center will be hosting a five day children's summer language camp. Children will have the opportunity to learn Spanish, French, American Sign Language (ASL), Portuguese, and English by participating in fun games, crafts, and songs, as well as, grade level reading and writing activities!

Playing Time with Djo Bi, 6:30pm - 7:30pm

We will be joining in on the First Friday festivities with a drumming demo and show. Dr. Djo Bi is a master hand drummer from the village of Bangofia, Cote D'lvoire, West Africa where music permeates daily life. Ever since he was a toddler, Dr. Djo Bi has had a drum in his hands due to his unique talent and ability to understand the rhythms and sounds of his culture. After several years of musical experience, he moved to New York where he has been performing and educating people ever since. Dr. Djo Bi has taught individuals of all ages across the United States. He loves his craft and lives with it every day. It is his mission to share his love of music with you.

As always, there will be tasty food to enjoy with your show. On the menu there will be Farmers Market Salad and Strawberry Basil Lemonade.

Women's Bikeshow1st Annual Ladies Bike Show

Beyond Borders will be hosting it's first annual women's motorcycle show! Show bikes should arrive at 5 to 5:45 PM with judging starting at 7 PM. Prizes will be given out for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. There will be music, sidewalk sales, and lots of fun! Lady Riders…it’s your day!

For three nights this summer, Healthy Homestead will host regional musicians on their "stage", the base of an old silo at Ripberger Farm in Kokomo, Indiana. BYOLC (Bring Your Own Lawn Chair) and enjoy a casual evening on the lawn.
Bind Cafe will be on location selling:
June 10th will feature up and coming band, The Stoffs with Laura Socha and Brenna McCormack opening with traditional and contemporary folk.

The show is $7 for adults, $5 for students, and kids five and under get in for free!

The Writer's Cafe is a "Kokomo-grown" community for writers of all genre and walks of life living in & or near the city of Kokomo. The group meets bi weekly to discuss writing, share resources, and seek support. Write-ins and Writer's Cafes are also scheduled throughout the month to provide members with additional opportunities to connect and share. The group also hosts events and workshops for the community.

The New Jim Crow Reading Group will begin a necessary and relevant conversation about the main issues addressed in the poignant book by Michelle Alexander: the origins of mass incarceration in the US; the racialized structure of the US justice system; the aftermath and legacy of mass incarceration. The conversation will be led and motivated by group participants with hopes of drawing connections to recent events and creating strategies for our community.

A former Spanish K-12 certified classroom teacher, turned award-winning business owner, she holds a B.A. in Education and Spanish with Reading Specialist and Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) endorsements. She is passionate about working with you to create common ground and connect with the world through the study of language and culture.
